The pendulum swings

A side routed in one election is said to be able to come back by the next: big swings follow change elections and a landslide's glow fades fast, so neither the winners' triumph nor the losers' despair is taken as lasting.

๐Ÿชจ Beliefs๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ Horserace๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ Elections

โš ๏ธ A story people tell, not a claim that it's true.

A motif is the shape of a story as its tellers tell it, named the way a folklorist names a tale type, so the same story told about other people, by the other side or in another year lands in the same place. Some of the claims below are true, many are false. Arguing against a story is often a story of its own, its answer (Voter fraud is answered by Voter suppression, Lawfare by No one is above the law), and we file it there; where no answer has a motif yet, the arguments against a story sit with its tellings.

๐Ÿชœ Its family

what it rests on, what rests on it, and the motifs that answer it

โ†”๏ธ answers and mirrors:

๐Ÿ”— goes with: ๐Ÿงฉ Lost the race, won the issue

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Who it came up with

the shows we follow where its claims came up (2 left-leaning, 1 center, 7 right-leaning so far), colored by the show's lean; the bar is how many of its claims each one heard

  1. ๐Ÿ˜ The Matt Walsh Show 2 claims
  2. ๐Ÿ˜ Bannon's War Room 1 claim
  3. ๐Ÿ˜ Fox News Rundown 1 claim
  4. ๐Ÿ˜ Ruthless 1 claim
  5. ๐Ÿซ The Bulwark Podcast 1 claim
  6. โš–๏ธ The Daily (NYT) 1 claim
  7. ๐Ÿ˜ The Megyn Kelly Show 1 claim
  8. ๐Ÿซ The MeidasTouch Podcast 1 claim
  9. ๐Ÿ˜ The Michael Berry Show 1 claim
  10. ๐Ÿ˜ Timcast IRL (podcast) 1 claim

"Came up on" means one of its claims was heard on the show: told, reported or argued against. We don't yet mark which. Show leans are our own grouping of the shows we transcribe.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ In so many words

the words that carry it

๐Ÿ’ฌ the tellers' own words: โ€œIt would not be unprecedented for the Republicans to reflect, rebuild, and rebrandโ€ โ€œIt's not actually a thing where you defeat one of the two major parties.โ€ โ€œit's possible that in 2028, we're going to look back on 2026 and be like, that feels like it was 200 years ago.โ€ โ€œThat doesn't mean it's permanent.โ€ โ€œthere have been big swings within a couple of years after a big change election like this.โ€ โ€œThere will be ups and downs. There will be losses politically.โ€ โ€œThese are seasonalities that occur.โ€ โ€œthings change quickly ... it could happen the other wayโ€

๐Ÿงถ Its claims

what's been told in this shape, in our words, by who told it: newest first in each; a claim's dots are the shows it came up on, in their lean's color (point at them for their names)

Told on the left 1

claims heard on left-leaning shows, and no right-leaning one

  • 2026-11-06 โ€œAfter a historic rout, the Republican Party is said to be mortally wounded, its epitaph written, though others say no defeat is permanent.โ€ 1

Told on the right 2

claims heard on right-leaning shows, and no left-leaning one

  • 2026-11-05 โ€œRepublicans could rebuild and retake the White House in 2028, as parties have after past change elections, and a Democratic impeachment push would guarantee it.โ€ 1
  • 2026-11-05 โ€œDemocrats will assume power and overreach by making horrible mistakes.โ€ 4

Told on both sides 1

claims heard on left- and right-leaning shows alike

  • 2026-11-05 โ€œDemocrats are in an unprecedented position in Texas.โ€ 5
